What it is

The KONG Classic Small is basically a hollow red rubber cone — wider base, smaller top opening. Made from natural rubber with that distinct KONG smell, it bounces unpredictably when you throw it. And it holds stuffed treats when you need to keep a dachshund busy for longer than 30 seconds. The design hasn’t changed in decades because it simply works — the tapered shape creates unpredictable bounces that trigger a dog’s prey drive.

Why dachshunds love it

The Small size is about 3 inches tall with a 1.5-inch base. Oscar’s a standard dachshund at roughly 18 lbs and it fits perfectly in his mouth. Not too big that he can’t grip it. Not so small it becomes a choking hazard. The rubber has enough give to be satisfying for chewing but is tough enough that he hasn’t actually destroyed one. Still, the nylon bone he got on the same day? Gone in 20 minutes. So durability-wise, KONG wins by a landslide for this category.

Stuffing combos I’ve actually tested

This is where the toy earns its keep. I’ve tried a dozen combinations over three years and here’s what I’ve settled on:

• Peanut butter (xylitol-free, of course) — freeze it overnight and get 45-60 minutes of quiet while Oscar works it out on his bed
• Kibble + a smear of pumpkin — easier cleanup, still holds his attention for a solid 20 minutes
• Freeze-dried liver treats jammed into the small hole — takes him a good 30 minutes to work them all out with his tongue
• Plain wet dog food frozen inside — warm weather enrichment, keeps him occupied while I get dinner going

The durability timeline

But here’s the honest part. The KONG Classic isn’t indestructible. My guy is a moderate chewer, not a power chewer — his jaw is built for hunting badgers, not demolishing car tires. Even so, after about 8 months of daily use the first one developed small surface cracks around the top rim. Then by month 11 those cracks turned into a small tear where I could fit a fingernail. So I replaced it at that point. For a $12 toy that gets used every single day for nearly a year, that’s solid value in my book.

What I’d change

Honestly I wish KONG sold the Small as a 2-pack. We go through one every 10-12 months and you end up re-ordering mid-crate-training-session when you realize your current one is cracked. Also worth noting — the Small has a narrower interior cavity than the Medium or Large. So you’re limited on what you can stuff inside for larger frozen treats. A single big frozen liver chunk won’t fit through the top hole.

Who should buy this

Dachshund owners who want a toy that pulls triple duty — fetch, chewing, and food enrichment. It’s especially good for crate training and separation anxiety work because a stuffed frozen KONG buys you roughly 20-60 minutes of focused calm. So if you have a puppy who’s driving you crazy, this is your sanity-saver.

Who should skip it

Heavy chewers who destroy black KONG Extreme or Goughnuts in under a week will make short work of the Classic red rubber. Those dogs need the KONG Extreme instead with its denser black rubber formula.

Three years of Oscar testing says the KONG Classic Small is the first toy I’d recommend to any new dachshund owner. Get one. Stuff it. Freeze it. And thank me when you finish a full episode without interruption.
